All of our courses and programs are provided through the Lifesaving Society of Alberta & NWT, and include options that meet the Alberta requirements for Workplace First Aid. Learn what to do in an emergency in a supportive and collaborative environment, tailored to empowering individuals of all skill levels. Aquatic certifications and services are available to aquatic facilities interested in hosting a course for their teams.

First Aid Training

Basic First Aid

This 8-hour course is for those who would like to gain a general understanding of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of illness and injury. Skills include: assessment, CPR, AED use, management of choking, external bleeding, heart attack, and stroke. Includes CPR-C & AED certification.

Prerequisites: None

Intermediate First Aid (original or Recert)

This 16-hour original course or 8-hour recertification provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Intermediate First Aid is suited for those who want an in-depth understanding of first aid such as: medical/legal aspects, spinal injuries, environmental injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries. burns, and medical emergencies. Includes CPR-C & AED certification.

Recertification: Current Intermediate First Aid Certification

CPR-C with AED (Original or Recert)

This 5-hour course covers all aspects of CPR skills and theory for adults, children, and infants, including AED use. CPR-C also addresses stroke and heart attack management.

Oxygen Administration

This program provides the knowledge and skills required to administer oxygen in an emergency care situation.

Prerequisites: None

Basic Life Support

This course is designed specifically for healthcare providers, and covers aspects or CPR, AED use, and bag-valve-mask use.

Lifesaving First Aid Instructor

First Aid Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Lifesaving Society CPR, Basic First Aid, Intermediate First Aid, Aquatic Emergency Care, Basic Life Support, and Oxygen Administration programs. This course prepares instructors to apply level 1 leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach the First Aid programs for which they hold a current candidate award.

Prerequisites:

16-hour: Current Intermediate First Aid, Lifesaving Instructor.

32-hour: Current Intermediate First Aid, 18 years of age or older.

Aquatic Certifications, Leadership courses, and Safety Services

SwimAbilities Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating participants in the SwimAbilities lear to swim programs. This 12-hour course prepares instructors to demonstrate level 2 leadership competencies. SwimAbilities is designed for participants who require additional supports.

Prerequisites: Current Swim or Lifesaving Instructor certification.

SwimAbilities Instructor

Education and Proficiency Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Preschool Proficiency, Lifeguard Fitness Skills and Attendant programs. This 4-hour course prepares instructors to apply level 2 leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach the Education and Proficiency topical streams for which they hold a candidate award in.

Prerequisites: Current Lifesaving Instructor certification or higher.

Education and Proficiency Instructor

Swim and Lifesaving Instructor

Swim and Lifesaving Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life, Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medal, and CPR programs.

The 40-hour course includes both Swim, Lifesaving, and CPR Instructor certifications

The 32-hour Swim Instructor only course and 32-hour Lifesaving Instructor only course are also available.

Prerequisites: 15 years of age or older, Bronze Cross or higher.

16-hour Lifesaving Instructor: Swim Instructor.

Shallow Water Attendant

Candidates will learn how to effectively communicate and educate the public about safe, appropriate use of amenities, and how to respond to minor emergencies as part of a team. Under the direction and leadership of a current National lifeguard, candidates can assist in attending to waterslide landing areas, lazy rivers, and other areas where the water is less than 1.2m deep.

4-hours.

Prerequisites: 14 years of age or older and current Aquatic Emergency Care OR 14 years of age or older, current AB Workplace approved Basic or Intermediate First Aid, and Bronze Cross

Preschool Proficiency

The Preschool Proficiency program is a knowledge-based program that enhances the understanding of preschoolers and how they learn, develop, and acquire skills in the water. 

4-hours.

Prerequisites: 14 years of age or older.

National Lifeguard Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the National Lifeguard Pool, Water park, Waterfront, or Surf programs.

The 16-hour Instructor course prepares instructors to apply level 3 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating.

Prerequisites: Current National Lifeguard (any option) held for at least 2 years.

National Lifeguard Instructor

National Lifeguard - Waterfront

This 40-hour course trains lifeguards in safety supervision and rescue in a waterfront environment.

Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, current AB workplace approved Intermediate First Aid, 15 years of age or older.

*20-hour course available for candidates who hold a National Lifeguard-Pool certification.

National Lifeguard - Waterpark

This 12-hour course trains lifeguards in safety supervision and rescue in a waterpark environment.

National Lifeguard - Pool

This 40-hour course trains lifeguards in safety supervision and rescue in a pool environment.

Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, current AB workplace approved Intermediate First Aid, 15 years of age or older.

The SEE (Supervision, Evaluation, and Enhancement) Audit program was developed to assist owner’s and owner’s agents of supervised swimming pools and waterfronts in evaluating lifeguard or instructional team surveillance. SEE Audits use a standardized approach and provides qualitative measurement for performance expectations. A SEE Audit can be conducted quickly between 15-30 minutes and can be conducted during any type of program. The audit report is completed by the SEE Auditor and submitted to facility management immediately following the completion of the audit.

Amenity Attendant

Candidates will learn how to effectively communicate and educate the public about safe, appropriate use of facilities, and their amenities as well as how to respond to minor emergencies as part of a team. Amenity Attendants can assist in monitoring a variety of amenities in an aquatic or multipurpose facility.
